Supreme Court orders surprise checks of operation theatres and complaint desks in every hospital after sponge-in-abdomen case
Pakistan's Supreme Court has ordered regular and surprise inspections of operation theatres in public and private hospitals, complaint desks in every hospital, and patient-safety training for doctors and nurses. The directions came in a medical negligence case brought by a Balochistan woman who said surgical sponges were left in her abdomen after a caesarean. Authorities must report compliance within 90 days.
