Snakebites far deadlier than official data shows: up to 7 million envenomings and 513,000 deaths a year, study estimates
A study in PLOS Medicine estimates that 2.1 to 7 million people suffer snake envenoming every year and that 274,000 to 513,000 die — far more than earlier counts. Sub-Saharan Africa carries 45% of the burden, while South Asia is also badly affected. The researchers say better data should guide where antivenom and trained health workers go.
