Petrol down Rs2.71 to Rs379.31 a litre, diesel up 31 paisas to Rs390.11 for October 22

In one minute

Pakistan's Petroleum Division has cut the petrol price by Rs2.71 to Rs379.31 per litre and raised high-speed diesel by Rs0.31 to Rs390.11 for Thursday, October 22. Prices are now set daily under a mechanism introduced in July, and the government says changes follow global Platts rates, premiums and incidental costs.

Why prices changed

The ministry said the change follows global developments, including movements in Platts benchmark rates, import premiums and incidental costs. Pakistan imports most of its petroleum, so swings in world oil prices show up at local pumps quickly.

The Express Tribune reported that Brent crude was trading at about $109 a barrel on Wednesday. Markets are watching continuing attacks on ships in the Strait of Hormuz and the lack of US-Iran talks.

How daily pricing affects you

Because rates are now notified every day, pump prices can go up and down within the same week, as they did between October 21 and 22. A few practical points:

  • Check the notified rate before filling up, especially if you buy fuel for business in bulk.
  • Diesel matters most for transport and goods costs. Even small daily rises can add up for truckers and farmers.
  • The government's Rs100-per-litre relief scheme, announced on September 13, covers motorcycles, rickshaws and cars up to 800cc. It allows up to 20 litres a month for two- and three-wheelers and 30 litres for small cars, according to The Express Tribune.

Background

Since September 17, fuel-conservation measures have been in force, according to The Express Tribune. Under them, most shops and markets close by 9pm, wedding halls by 10pm, and restaurants by 11pm, while takeaway and home delivery are exempt.

What to watch

  • Tomorrow's notification: under daily pricing, the next change could come within 24 hours.
  • Global oil prices and shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, the biggest outside drivers.
  • Whether diesel, which costs more than petrol, keeps edging up and feeds into transport fares and food prices.
