KP emergency hits students: matric Annual-II exams postponed indefinitely by all 8 boards — which schools are open today

In one minute

All eight education boards in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have postponed the SSC (matric) Annual-II exams for the second time, with no new date, after emergency and governor's rule were imposed in the province. Peshawar's schools reopen today, but institutions stay shut in Mardan, Nowshera and Dera Ismail Khan. AIOU has moved its 12–13 October papers to 2–3 November outside Hazara Division.

Key takeaways

  • All eight Boards of Intermediate and Secondary Education (BISEs) in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have postponed the SSC (matric) Annual-II exams 2026 for the second time, "until further orders". No new date has been given.
  • The papers were first due on 7 October (moved because of the PTI long march), then rescheduled to 12 October — that start was also cancelled after emergency and governor's rule were imposed on 11 October.
  • Peshawar: schools, colleges and universities reopen today, Tuesday 13 October, the deputy commissioner said, and BRT services resume.
  • Closed today: all institutions in Mardan, Nowshera and Dera Ismail Khan; DI Khan has also cancelled all exams scheduled for 13 October.
  • AIOU: papers due on 12 and 13 October at KP centres are moved to 2 and 3 November; centres in Hazara Division continue on the original schedule.

What the boards said

Each board issued its own notification. BISE Bannu said the exam was postponed in Bannu, Lakki Marwat and North Waziristan "due to the current law and order situation". BISE Dera Ismail Khan said it was following the decision of the other KP boards and told students to check bisedik.edu.pk for updates. Dawn separately reported that the Bannu and DI Khan boards had cited the suspension of communication services.

All boards say a revised date sheet will be announced later.

Why this is happening

The federal government imposed an emergency under Article 232 and governor's rule under Article 234 on 11 October, citing the security situation and what it called the provincial government's non-cooperation on counter-terrorism. Roads in several districts were blocked with containers. PTI chairman Gohar Ali Khan said the party would challenge the measures in the Peshawar High Court on Tuesday. See our earlier reports on the emergency for the political background.

What students and parents should do

  • Do not trust forwarded notices. Peshawar's deputy commissioner specifically warned against "fake notification or rumours" about closures.
  • Check your own board's official website and notifications for the new date sheet.
  • AIOU students outside Hazara should note the new dates of 2 and 3 November.

What to watch

  • A revised SSC Annual-II date sheet from the KP boards.
  • Daily closure orders from district administrations while the emergency lasts.
  • Whether other university and entry-test schedules in KP are also moved.

We will update this page when the boards announce new dates.
