Key takeaways

  • At least 19 people were killed and 25 injured in a stampede outside the Chorebagan community Durga Puja pandal in north Kolkata on Saturday evening (17 October), the day of Maha Saptami, according to West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari, as reported by PTI. An earlier AFP count put the toll at 17.
  • A seven-year-old girl is among the dead, AFP reports. Six victims had been identified by Saturday night.
  • Police say the waiting crowd rushed forward when rain started, and the chief minister says an announcement by the organisers triggered the rush.
  • Organisers, private security guards and officials on duty have been detained, and a special investigation team led by a sitting Calcutta High Court judge has been announced.
  • Families of the dead will get Rs25 lakh and a state government job, the chief minister said; the Prime Minister announced a further Rs2 lakh ex gratia.

What happened

The crowd surge happened outside the pandal of the Chorebagan Sarbojanin puja in north Kolkata, one of thousands of community pujas in the city during the festival. A senior police officer told AFP that after rain began at night an announcement caused "commotion", and people waiting outside pushed and rushed forward and fell, leading to the stampede.

Speaking at Kolkata Medical College and Hospital, where victims were taken, Chief Minister Adhikari said 19 people had died and 25 were being treated, according to PTI. He said police had collected CCTV footage and that anyone who failed to manage the crowd — puja committee members, home guards, police or private security — would face action.

Relief announced

Who Announcement
West Bengal government Rs25 lakh and a Group D government job for the family of each person killed; Rs5 lakh for each injured person, with full treatment costs covered
Prime Minister Narendra Modi Rs2 lakh ex gratia for the next of kin of each person killed; Rs50,000 for the injured

The state has also set up a toll-free helpline for families, PTI reports.

The investigation

Adhikari said a special investigation team, with members from the STF, CID and other departments and headed by a sitting judge of the Calcutta High Court, will look into the incident. The state will write to the High Court's chief justice to nominate the judge. The administration has also advised several large theme pujas to close their pandals temporarily; Kolkata has close to 3,500 pandals during the festival, according to PTI.

Reactions

President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah expressed condolences. Shah, who was in Kolkata to visit pandals on Sunday, said he would postpone his programme and visit the injured. Former chief minister Mamata Banerjee said she was deeply shocked.

Background

Crowd crushes are a recurring danger at large religious and public events in India. AFP notes that a temple stampede in Bihar killed at least seven people in August, while 121 people died at a religious gathering in Uttar Pradesh in 2024.

What to watch

  • Whether the death toll changes as hospitals update figures.
  • The name of the High Court judge appointed to lead the probe, and any arrests.
  • New crowd-control rules for the remaining days of Durga Puja.

This is a developing story; figures are as reported by officials on Saturday night and may change.
