Istanbul flooding leaves three dead after extreme rainfall

Key takeaways

Officials reported three deaths after heavy rain flooded roads and homes across Istanbul, with rescue and recovery work continuing.

What happened

Authorities reported three deaths after a major downpour flooded parts of Istanbul. The governor's office also reported missing people as emergency crews worked in affected areas. Turkey's environment minister described it as the city's heaviest rain in 83 years, a claim attributed to the minister rather than an independently checked record.

Why it matters

Flooding disrupts transport, homes and essential services, and conditions can remain dangerous after rain eases.

What to watch

Official updates on missing people, road access and damage assessments may change the picture. This remains a developing emergency.
