Key takeaways

  • Balochistan's Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) says 10 militants were killed in an intelligence-based operation in the Rara Sham area of Barkhan district on Saturday, 10 October.
  • Two CTD personnel were injured and are receiving treatment, according to the provincial government.
  • A large quantity of weapons and ammunition was recovered, officials said.
  • The government describes those killed as members of "Fitna al-Hindustan", the label Pakistan uses for militant groups it says are backed by India. That attribution is the government's position and has not been independently verified.
  • Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi praised the CTD and wished the injured a quick recovery.

What officials said

Shahid Rind, Adviser to the Balochistan Chief Minister for Information and Political Affairs, confirmed the operation at a press briefing. He said the CTD moved after receiving precise intelligence about the militants' movements, that a "fierce exchange of fire" followed when teams closed in on the hideout, and that all ten militants were killed.

A CTD spokesperson, quoted by ARY News, said the operation was carried out under "Operation Radd-ul-Fitna 3" in the Rarasham Valley. Radio Pakistan reported the same toll and said security forces remain committed to eliminating the militants from the province.

Naqvi said the CTD had "thwarted the nefarious designs" of the militants with a timely operation, and that "all institutions are committed to maintaining peace in Balochistan".

What is not confirmed

  • The identities and affiliations of the ten people killed have not been released beyond the official label.
  • There is no independent account from the area; all details so far come from the Balochistan government, the CTD and state media.
  • Officials have not said what kind of attack, if any, the group was planning.

Background: a hard few months for security

The Express Tribune notes that Pakistan has seen a surge in militant violence over the past three months. Recent incidents it lists include:

Date Incident
Last week A blast at a joint checkpoint in Darazinda, Dera Ismail Khan, killed 12 and injured 35; the TTP claimed responsibility
19 September A blast at a mosque in Kohat's Police Lines killed 23, including 15 police personnel
1 September Six personnel and a customs official killed as forces foiled an attempt to breach the Customs House in Balochistan
July At least 30 people, including 27 police personnel, killed in an ambush in Ziarat

Separately, ARY News reports that security forces killed five militants in Mastung district on 7 October.

What to watch

  • Whether the CTD or the provincial government releases more details, such as names of those killed or the group involved.
  • Whether further operations follow in Barkhan and neighbouring districts.
  • Whether the federal government's push on security leads to any new announcements for Balochistan this week.

This is a developing story and the figures above come from official statements. We will update the post if anything changes.
